What Are Tissue Salts?

Tissue Salts are the 12 Essential Minerals that are found in every cell.  Tissue Salts have been used successfully by millions of people worldwide for over a century. These essential minerals support overall wellbeing and vitality, and are really benefitted from when taken consistently over several months.

At the same time, due to the quick absorption and fast action of Tissue Salts, they also make an excellent choice for first aid situations.  For example, I always keep Ferr Phos close by in the kitchen for burns and cuts.

Where does the name come from?  Tissue, because they make up all our body cells which join together to form tissues and the term Salt in chemistry is when an acidic substance and a basic substance have formed a bond and is now a neutral substance. For example, the mineral salt Mag Phos is created from the bonding between Magnesium which is an alkaline mineral and Phosphorous which is very acidic.  Mag Phos is found in all of the muscle cells in the body.

Tissue Salts are a collection of twelve essential inorganic minerals which were identified by Dr. Schuessler in the late 1870’s. These minerals are universal and can be found everywhere from the soils and rocks, to the cells of all humans, animals and plants. Dr. Schuessler, a German MD recognized these minerals as critical for balancing cellular activity and maintaining overall health. Dr. Schuessler analyzed the ashes of human cremations and found these minerals remaining.  Schuessler analyzed each tissue for their mineral composition and was able to identify which minerals supported the different tissues, as well as the primary actions of the minerals. Dr. Schuessler was a busy practitioner with a large practice and he made many notes of the ailments each individual was afflicted with during their lifetime, and also the cause of death, and then looked at the mineral makeup of the ashes.

By completing this type of analysis and keeping pristine records he was able to note patterns and identify which minerals were deficient in which dis-ease states. For example, when we are experiencing cramps and spasms, it is one of our body’s ways of letting us know that our cells are low in magnesia of phosphate.

These observastions led him to develop the treatment of illness and imbalance with the 12 tissue salt minerals.  His work has proven itself over and over again and his gentle way of restoring harmony to the body termed Biochemistry has been practiced globally by many health practitioners.

As we know, minerals can often be difficult to break down and fully absorb, they are rocks afterall!   Dr. Schussler overcame this by preparing the 12 minerals in a homeopathic manner. The minerals are broken down by hand grinding them with a mortar and pestle to reduce their size, and then diluted in solution. This method of preparation ensures the tissue salts become rapidly and easily assimilated.

Typically, tissue salts are prepared to a 6X potency….now for a bit of science class… A 1X potency is arrived at by adding one part mineral ground into a powder to 9 parts of a lactose base, one that is commonly used as a base for homeopathic remedies and tissue salts. Why 6X?  This is how the minerals are found in our cells.  Some are also common in 3X and 12X dilutions.  Microscopic amounts of minerals operate inside our microscopic cells.

When we chew the tissue salt tabs, they are absorbed right away through the mucous membranes in the mouth and they start to act immediately. A mineral supplement or even a food rich in minerals must go through the digestive tract and be broken down by the system before it is in a form where it can enter the bloodstream and be carried to where it is needed. These actions depend on a lot of factors being in place, our digestive systems must absorb, assimilate and deliver the minerals to where they need to go and sometimes there are obstructions to these processes.  This is where the addition of a Tissue Salt can assist the body to balance the flow of minerals.

It is not always more that is needed, it may be simply we need to optimize what we already have.

By adding in a microscopic dose of a mineral that the cells readily recognize and utilize can assist the overall cell metabolism and instead of Calcium hanging out in the blood, the tissue salts create a more favourable environment for the Calcium to enter the bone cells.

What do these minerals do for our cells? The tissue salts enable and restore equilibrium, supporting healthy cellular metabolism, they balance the flow of the minerals from within to without and they provide the food for our cells to build, and support, move and regenerate, and join together in the harmonious dance of life.

A 1X potency is arrived at by adding one part mineral to 9 parts of a lactose base, a rather benign base that is commonly used as a base for homeopathic remedies and tissue salts. The 6X dilution still contains physical properties, and so in essence, Tissue Salts are easy to absorb micro-dose minerals.
